Loosen the nut and push the lever as far into park as it will go to be sure it is in park all the way. Make sure the shift lever is in the park position. Do not let anyone touch the shifter now and make sure it is fully in park. Tighten the nut on the lever now. It should be adjusted properly at this point.

The way I learned it was, as long as the truck is not 'hunting' or 'shifting' between overdrive and drive, you should be okay with towing in 'D' or with the overdrive engaged. On hilly situtations, I'd take out the 'OD' and let the truck tow in 'D' no overdrive.

By trying to shift into first at speeds higher than 15-20 these parts are spinning at such different speed they do not "sync" and you get clatter and it will not want to go into gear. The simple solution is don't shift to first about 15 mph with the engine at idle. In theory if you rev the engine you will be more able to shift into first.
The truck also will not shift into 5th or 6th gear. On highway speeds at 60mph and above it is sitting at 3500RPM. Seems fine driving at low in town speeds where it doesn’t need to shift past 4th gear. It is crucial in controlling line pressure to the hydraulic components of the transmission and incorrect adjustment will affect shift behavior and leads to early failure. The 3-4 clutch pack is a common failure item in this transmission, due mostly to the design of the input drum where the 3-4 clutch resides.
